The Undoing Racism and Community Organizing WorkshopⓇ from the People’s Institute for Survival is [PISAB’s] signature workshop. Participants will experience a humanistic process for laying a foundation to explore how we have been socialized and conditioned to think about race and racism. We first analyze class, power and institutional/individual relationships to and within communities. As power is analyzed, we will explore how we play a role in maintaining the current disparate racial outcomes that every system and institution produces. This intensive, interactive process challenges participants to analyze the structures of power and privilege that hinder social equity and prepares them to be effective organizers for justice.” Undoing Racism is a three day foundational workshop currently offered virtually with in-person workshops in the New York area beginning around March 2022.
Getting to the Root is a virtual two day foundational workshop, led by founding and longtime core trainers of the People’s Institute. This version of the Undoing Racism Workshop was established to meet shifting demands during the pandemic particularly in Rockland County, New York. Administered through Rockland’s Center for Safety and Change describes the workshop this way: “Systemic racism exists, advantaging white people while disadvantaging those who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color. To get real and do something about it, we must be willing to learn from history, understand power and organize for social justice and equity.”
